The Dawkins Delusion
The Enemies of Reason Channel 4 13th and 20th August 2007.
Review In my Opinion - by Louise McLean
Professor Richard Dawkins is a man on a mission. His task seems to be to bring down anything that conflicts with his belief in Science. To this end he presents two programmes one on mediums, astrologers, psychics and dowsers, the other on alternative medicine including Ayurvedic, homeopathy, kinesiology and other therapies.
He manages to throw in a few of his bete noires, such as the conspiracy theory on 9/11, the MMR vaccine and the growing unpopularity of pharmaceutical medicine.
Let us define the meaning of the word Science.
According to a 1970 edition of Webster’s New World dictionary, the word comes from the Latin sciens, present participle of scire, to know.
The dictionary says:
1. originally, knowledge.
2. systematized knowledge derived from observation, study and experimentation.
3. a branch of knowledge, especially one concerned with establishing and systematizing facts, principles and methods.
4. a). the systematized knowledge of nature. b). any branch of this. See natural science.
Homeopathy, for example, is a science because all knowledge pertaining to homeopathic medicines is derived from observation, study and experimentation. In fact it is known to be an art and a science.
It has been said many times that if homeopathy is proven to work (as we homeopaths know it does), it would literally turn established science as we know it, on its head. Hence it is very threatening to orthodox science. Yet even in the programme it was admitted that countless millions worldwide use homeopathy and swear by its efficacy.
Unsurprisingly, homeopathy received the greatest disdain in the programme and the usual nonsense was trotted out about dilution and water. The truth is that no homeopathic medicine can be made using only dilution - without Succussion (vigorous shaking between each numerical potency) and no mention that the medicines are made using 40% distilled water and 60% alcohol to preserve the original substance, i.e. a plant, mineral, metal, etc. being made up.
The fact of the matter is that acupuncture, ayurvedic, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, herbs, etc. ARE NOT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE because these therapeutics have been practiced for hundreds, if not thousands of years!
I would argue that modern medicine is in fact ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, only having been in existence since the advent and discovery of antibiotics by Fleming in 1928 - 79 years ago!!
Which would you rather trust, something that has been used for hundreds of years, which has stood the test of time, or medicines which have only just been invented?!?
The fact is that people are turning their backs on untried and for the most part improperly tested pharmaceutical drugs and reaching back to discover the ancient and timeless wisdom and knowledge of the past.
Despite the wonders of scientific technology and wizardry, one thing will never change and that is human nature. So often, from the homeopathic point of view, diseases can stem from the mindset of the patient which then filter down to the body causing illness.
Illnesses may also be inherited or caused by drugging. Modern medicine does not want to treat causation, still less cares about it, whereas natural medicine is extremely concerned with searching for it and treating accordingly. Chemical drugs can wreak havoc by throwing all the systems of the body out of balance.
Scientists such as Dawkins do not believe in anything that cannot be ascertained using the 5 senses. Yet of course we cannot see electricity but would he deny its existence? Similarly, can he see or touch the thoughts in his head? Then according to his belief system, they simply do not exist.
How is it that man can actually have the breathtaking arrogance to believe that he is even capable of understanding the forces of Nature on this planet, never mind the Universe? If a scientist starts off with an incorrect premise, it is possible that every theory emanating from that premise is going to be incorrect.
It is true that modern science is incredible with all the marvellous mod cons and gadgets that have been invented but it is many of the so called advancements in medical science that people now question.
The medical scientists cannot bear to have their belief systems questioned or queried and can be unbending, unyielding and impregnable in their views. They hang on to them for dear life, lashing out at anything that might threaten them.
If people like Dawkins weren’t given so much airtime, platforms on television and press coverage, the whole thing would be risible. As it is the public are left to make up their own minds, resulting in more confusion than ever.
Yet in some ways the programmes may have increased people’s curiosity and even promoted these disciplines. Certainly the clear contrast between Dawkins’ scepticism and the warm and pleasant people he interviews is very noticeable.
There is a great deal of mention of the placebo effect which one homeopathic practitioner recently concluded was really an allopathic myth!
Once again, for the uninitiated, a baby or an animal could not possibly be aware that the reason they got promptly better after suffering an acute illness was in their imagination or the result of a sympathetic practitioner!!
Regarding the hallowed gold standard, gold plated, randomised, double-blind trials of allopathic medicine. We hear constantly that alternative medicine has not undergone proper scientific trials, trials which will never be suitable for therapies that treat people as unique Individuals.
Surely science should be open to new possibilities and not be confined to testing using such limited methods?
In addition, the medical profession have stolen the manner of using healthy volunteers for their trials as homeopathy does but for a completely different reason, so that the volunteers will be less likely to become ill after taking the medicines on trial.
In homeopathy, the effects of the homeopathic medicine on healthy volunteers is strictly studied and observed so that the properties of the substance can be noted and fed into a database after the Provers start developing symptoms, for inclusion into the homeopathic Materia Medica and for the purpose of treating sick people.
With modern medicine, it seems ludicrous to test medicines on healthy people in order to decide they work or are safe. Just how ridiculous is shown by the fact that for example a trial for anti-depressants a year ago strictly excluded those people who suffered from depression!
When drugs are trialled on people who actually have the condition they are supposed to be cured of, there has been evidence that the results can be skewed and scientists are paid to put their name to papers proclaiming the safety and success of a drug. Editors of top medical journals have complained frequently that studies on new drugs have been found to be written by the pharmaceutical companies themselves!
Vaccines is one of the great hallmarks of modern medicine. The injecting of disease and poisons into the healthy body. These cause all manner of new and increasingly difficult to treat chronic illnesses such as the epidemic of autism through massive accumulative doses of mercury which lodges on the brain, impeding its functions.
The Pill which has created stubborn fungal candida in women and in children born of those women. The liberal use of antibiotics which suppress, not cure an illness, also causes candida. Antibiotics can be lifesaving in certain instances but not in people who have had too many of them and there will always be a homeopathic medicine that can equally successfully do the job without the side effects.
Germ theory was trundled out in the programme and its discovery hailed as a great landmark. In fact the theory is incorrect. It is one of the basics of modern medicine. Not long ago I watched How Clean is Your House, a programme most Brits have heard of. The childless couple living in West London had a FILTHY house, filled with dogs. They could not have cared less about the dirt and the wife was filmed allowing the dogs to lick her lips as she kissed them. Items were sent off to laboratories and they were severely rebuked for their unhygenic lifestyle, yet the wife assured the presenters that they had never suffered any ill health.
What about all the doctors and nurses who go about their healing in virulent epidemics, yet never catch the illness. Many so called epidemics, especially the so called Spanish Flu were caused by mass vaccination and those unvaccinated remained well.
The bottom line is that all the premises of science are being questioned at this time and new frontiers are opening up with true scientific enquiry being crushed. Wonderful new safe and pollution-free forms of energy have been discovered including petrol-free cars, but do we see them in action? No, we don’t because certain sectors of the economy, such as oil for example, will lose the power and control they have over our lives and over their profits.
Running Zeus Information Service for 4 ½ years and reading extensively has shown me quite clearly that there is a relatively small number of very powerful people who dictate international policy and who control the money flow of this planet.
These people want to continue that way and anything, whether it be alternative medicine, whether it be free energy, whether it be true democracy, will not be aired in the media which they control and suppress to prevent all attempts at revealing the truth.
This is now like a boiling pot and the lid cannot be contained much longer as more and more people, especially through reading other points of view via the one last stand for freedom - the internet - are opening up their minds and discovering the truth for themselves.
All the answers for Science, including health and disease, can be found in Nature herself and not from some fashionable hypothesis which changes with every newspaper headline.
Science in the 21st Century has become intransigent and blinkered. People want to explore other avenues new vistas and new experiences that are not reduced to a two dimensional reality - ones which are ecologically sound.
One thing was clear and that was that no matter what Richard Dawkins had learnt and experienced during the making of these two programmes, he seemed to have already made up his mind well beforehand.

I’ve just completed a critical reply on my blog to the second episode of Dawkins’ show, where he discusses homeopathy:
Is Homeopathic Medicine the “Enemy of Reason”?
