Florida opens School of Homeopathy

floridaSchool gets back in session at Lake Helen City Hall

It’s been a long time since school bells sounded in Lake Helen’s Minerva Bond Long Elementary School. But this fall, the bright second-floor community room in City Hall will once again bustle with students. At a recent Lake Helen City Commission meeting, city leaders approved a proposal to rent space in the renovated City Hall to the Florida Academy of Homeopathy, for the first year of a four-year, part-time training program for natural-health professionals.

The biweekly weekend classes, scheduled to begin in September, were proposed by Dr. Ann Jerome Croce, current director of the Florida Academy of Classical Homeopathy in DeLand. Croce described students who will enroll in the program. “They come from all over the country, most of them from Florida,” she wrote. “They are adults training to begin a new career.”

Croce, a former Stetson University professor, graduated from Yale and Brown universities. She is the dean of education and a board member for the National Association of Homeopathy, and has been teaching for more than 25 years.

The curriculum is a natural fit for the city, said Lake Helen Mayor Mark Shuttleworth. “The classes have a focus on living right, good nutrition and good health, all things we support as a community, as part of our Lake Helen lifestyle,” Shuttleworth said. “And it brings in some revenue, so It’s also an economic boost for Lake Helen,” he said. “So we’re excited.”
