Robert Douglas Hale was born in Dublin, he married Tedlie Hutchison, the eldest surviving daughter of T E Bodwich, African traveller, in 1849, and they had a son in 1859, when they were living at that time in St. Leonard’s on Sea.
An article in the Manchester Guardian on 20.9.1851 confirmed that Robert Douglas Hale had been alerted to the prejudice against homeopaths in Edinburgh, and had transferred to St. Andrews to obtain his graduation diploma, resulting in demand that he return it, which he did not, though he was forced to leave the town.
