Traces of cancer and psychiatric drugs have been found in Britain’s tap water, a report reveals. The report, commissioned by the drinking water watchdog in the country, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), reveals that pharmaceuticals are finding their way into the water supply despite extensive purification treatments used by water companies.

“Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland,” reports Scientific American editors. “Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift,” writes author Dan Fagin.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota have been evaluating the impact of antibiotic feeding in livestock production on the environment. This particular study, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), evaluated whether food crops accumulate antibiotics from soils spread with manure that contains antibiotics. Results from the study are published in the July-August 2007 issue of the Journal of Environmental Quality. The last couple days in North Carolina have been beautiful, warm enough to sit in the sun with only a t-shirt and watch the birds prepare for spring. I love nature, there is nothing like the smell of dirt as the ground begins thawing after a long winter or the excitement of seeing seedlings poke their heads out of the ground for the first time; I guess part of me is still the kid that likes to dig in the dirt.

‘Health disaster’ in French Caribbean linked to pesticides

The indiscriminate use of toxic pesticides on banana plantations in the French Caribbean has left much of the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe poisoned for a century to come, a report to the French parliament warned yesterday. The two islands and their 800,000 inhabitants faced a “health disaster”, with soaring rates of cancer and infertility, said Professor Dominique Belpomme, a French cancer specialist.

I still laugh about the way people started drinking mineral water in the 1960s and I remember it was on BBC news one evening, as the ‘establishment’ investigated mineral water to see what was in it and why all the health food beanies were drinking it!
