smallpox vaccineCatch this quick ’cause Radio 4 will only have this up for 7 days.

Abel Ryder refused to have his third son vaccinated against small pox because he had already lost two sons to the vaccine. The Origins of the British

britainStephen Oppenheimer’s new book The Origins of the British is packed full of interest for Celtic and English studies.

There is indeed ample evidence of Celtic writing, which is interesting because of the assertion that the Celts never wrote anything down. In fact it seems they wrote all the time and in many languages, for example, the many Tessera Hospitale and inscriptions located all over south west Europe, written in Celtiberian, Latin, Lepontic, Gaulish, Iberian, Lusitanian, Greek, Galatian and Noricum, Brythonic, Goidelic and with possible links to Basque. The Irish Lebor Gabála Érenn provides ample evidence of the survival of Celtic writing dating back to at least 2400 BCE. Funny how so little has survived! I wonder what happened to it all? Save the Borough Market Area

borough marketI have always loved this area of London and did most of my courting down there in the 1970s. It has always been a place I have romantic links too and my very first memories of London are from here. I cannot bear the thought that someone would pull it all down for money!!!

Borough market is London’s oldest market. It was established on the south bank of the Thames when the Romans build the first London Bridge and people have been trading on this site for over 2000 years. it’s a beautiful undercover food market and a truly wonderful part of London’s history

Some bright spark has decided to expand the railway line running through the roof of the market, which will also involve knocking down 23 of the beautiful listed and unlisted buildings in the closely surrounding area.

They already have planning permission, but are waiting funding and there is a strong local campaign to put a stop to it. If you know and love the market in its present state, please sign the petition to prevent this from happening. The plans, photographs and the petition are on the following

Unfortunately not a lot of people are aware of it so please sign it and pass it on to anyone else you know who loves this great bit of London heritage..

We are all Armenians now…

hrant dinkMy heart goes out to Turkey and Armenia on this very special day when Hrant Dink was buried. All of Turkey and Armenia came together today to celebrate this very special man, who was killed for speaking about the unspeakable.

His death has achieved something remarkable.dove

Thousands turned out today in Istanbul for his funeral, joined together by his death instead of torn apart. This is true sacrifice! This is true love and true healing.

Please don’t let this opportunity for the future be lost.

What wonderful people! I send you all my love.

Wise Words 1

adab poetryAmr iba Bahr al Jahiz wrote adab Poetry which was in vogue in Arabia in the 8th Century.

He wrote:

“A man who is noble does not pretend to be noble, any more than an eloquent man feigns eloquence. When a man exaggerates his qualities it is because of something lacking in himself; the bully gives himself airs because he is conscious of his weakness.
